[Solo Ep] Just Start Now

Project: Mom Ep 27 - Just Start Now

Episode Description

This time of year, there’s so much pressure to be better.

There’s a whole industry that capitalizes on personal growth and change, and in December, there’s so much focus on goal setting with this “new year, new you” idea.

Now, I’m not saying you should rest on your laurels and sit here indefinitely. But movement forward should be honoring you and your life, not driven through “shoulds” or comparisons.

That way, we’re INTENTIONAL about the choices we make and the goals we set instead of getting wrapped up in the pressure to make big changes during this holiday period.

Time for a change

Here’s my thing: I’ve been feeling sluggish in my body. I weigh the same now that I did right after I gave birth to Olive two years ago.

For me, exercise has been my last priority for months, if not for the last two years. For that season of life, it was okay; I didn’t feel the pull to carve out time. But lately I feel this lack of intentional movement is catching up to me. Inactivity isn’t working anymore.

I’m loving this part of motherhood; I no longer feel I have to be right next to Olive every minute, and I love watching her explore. But as she gets more incredible, I’ve begun feeling like I’ve let myself go physically.

It would be awesome to get back to the weight I was before getting pregnant, but what’s more important is feeling strong, capable and confident in my body again, because, let’s face it: when you’re a mom to a 32-pound toddler, being strong and quick are necessary.

Just start now

I was recently sharing my feelings about getting back in shape with my personal coach Randi Halaway a few weeks ago; about how I wasn’t feeling good about myself, but that I just didn’t know how to prioritize exercise at the expense of something else.

(If you haven’t listened to my episode featuring her, check it out!)

She told me something very simple: just start now. I didn’t have to create a full-blown workout schedule with weight loss in mind; I could start small. But the key is to start now, before the new year. Anything I did would be a step forward in the right direction.

What’s great is that this can be adapted to anything. If I dedicate one day a week, 30 minutes at a time, to one of my solo episodes for Season 2 before the end of the year, I’ll be so much closer.

If I spend 30 minutes of Olive’s naptime during the week reading, I can finish one of the business books I’ve been slacking on by the end of the year.

What do you want to achieve?

What is it you want to achieve? Have you been putting anything off because you don’t have time? Can you carve 10, 15, or 30 minutes a day to work on it for one or two days a week?

Think about it; if you carve this time out, you’ll be 30 minutes closer than you were before, two hours closer by the end of the year.

I don’t know about you, but for me, as a mom, two hours is a lot of time. Think of all we can accomplish if we give ourselves those two hours! Can you spend 20 minutes journaling, meditating, reading a book, stretching, or booking a call with your therapist?

What will you be focusing on now instead of waiting until the new year?

Notable Quote from Emily

“Can you carve out 10, 15, 30 minutes a day, just one or two days a week to work on it? That is 30 minutes closer than you were before and two hours closer by the end of the year. I don't know about all of you, but for me as a mom, two hours is a lot of time. Think of all we can accomplish if we got two hours.”

“As a coach, her goal is to help me overcome hurdles, challenges, limiting beliefs, and remind me of just how powerful I am. But she told me something very simple, and I wanted to share it. She encouraged me to just start now. Anything is further along than nothing. That I didn't have to create a full blown workout schedule with weight loss in mind. I could start small. But the key is to start now.”
